Technical Q&A

A hybrid solution coordinates a STATCOM and a switched capacitor bank or harmonic filter bank to operate as a single, integrated reactive power system. When a fast event occurs, such as a voltage sag or a large motor start, the STATCOM responds immediately to support the bus voltage.

Simultaneously, a command is issued to the switched capacitor stages. Because mechanical switches have an inherent closing delay, the STATCOM uses its short-term thermal overload capability (Depending on the STATCOM design, short-term overload capability may be as high as 3× its continuous rating) to carry the MVAR load during that interval. Once the capacitor stages are energized, they take over the bulk of the reactive power duty, allowing the STATCOM to return to its continuous rating and begin thermal recovery. This transforms the capacitor bank from a steady-state device into an event-support resource.

A full-rated STATCOM can provide the entire dynamic reactive power requirement, but at a significantly higher cost per MVAR than conventional passive reactive compensation. A hybrid system uses the STATCOM where its speed and dynamic response are required, while conventionally switched capacitor banks or harmonic filter banks provide the portion of the reactive power requirement that can be supplied by passive compensation while still meeting the project’s performance requirements.

This approach can substantially reduce the required continuous STATCOM rating while maintaining the dynamic voltage support and overall system performance required by the application. The result is a lower-cost reactive power solution that uses each technology where it provides the greatest benefit.

The key enabler is fast, repetitive, and transient-free switching technology, specifically the ABB VD4-CS1. Historically, hybrid concepts were limited by the mechanical endurance and switching transients of standard capacitor switching devices.

The VD4-CS1 enables frequent capacitor step changes, including reclosing within 200mS after opening without inrush or restrike concerns, allowing static VAR assets to operate near dynamic time scales. This technology addresses the switching limitations that previously made hybrid systems impractical.

The minimum feasible STATCOM rating is governed by the peak dynamic VAR requirement and the device’s specific overload multiple. The STATCOM must be large enough to “cover” the reactive power demand during the capacitor’s switching delay. However, the optimal rating also depends on:

  • Overload Duration: The time the STATCOM can safely operate above its continuous rating before thermal limits are reached.
  • Event Repetition: The required thermal recovery time between successive operations.
  • Control Margin: The residual capacity needed to maintain voltage stability once the capacitors have been inserted.
